Dr. S. Hermeling

I have defended my thesis and I am a Doctor!
The day was a marvelous event. The first few minutes during the defense I was quite nervous, but after that I even enjoyed it. All speeches were very positive about me, even the sketch of my colleagues was very nice. I enjoyed every second of the day (after 15.15). When looking at the weather I could not have picked a worse day. Because of the storm and the snow a lot of people arrived too late, or did not arrive at all.

proefpromotie

This morning i had my proefpromotie. Colleagues were supposed to ask questions about the thesis and I was supposed to answer them the way I would answer them on Friday, so my sentences should start with zeergeleerde opponent or hooggeleerde opponent.
When I drove in the car this morning I was starting to get nervous. Everything went rather well. Everybody told me that I was very confident in the way I was standing there and gave confident answers. So that should be a good sign for Friday.
Tomorrow my friend Chris for the States arrives and Mark, Monique and Camilla arrive, so I have a lot of distraction to not become too nervous.

only 5 more days

Only 5 more days to go until me defense.. i must say I am getting a little bit nervous. Tuesday I will have my “proefpromotie” during which colleagues can ask questions and I have to pretend they are the committee. Unfortunately it also looks like I am getting a cold. Marieke and a friend of hers had the same before their defense so I guess that is normal. I have started to read my own thesis again since a lot of things I do not quite remember anymore.

I will let you know how the proefpromotie went.

On their way

The theses are on their way to family, friends, colleagues etc. Hopefully the mail system of the university is efficient.

Nervous

Today is the defense of Marieke vd Aa. All preparations (writing, styling, printing) we mostly did together since we both had to do the same things and fill in the same forms. Today is her big day and I am nervous too. She will probably do a splendid job. I will pay special attention to all small details, like how does she stand, when do the paranimfen sit down etc.
I am also a little bit nervous because my theses should arrive today.

Shopping

Yesterday afternoon I had a shopping date with my paranimfen for clothing for the big day. We started at 12.30 and at 18.30 we were ready and had all three a new beautiful outfit!

Proefdrukken

Yesterday my “proefdrukken” arrived. I was shopping for clothes for the big day, but my colleague sent me an sms so I picked them up after the shopping day. I have only looked at the lay-out since if I start reading it again I will definitely find a lot of mistakes again and still a lot of mistakes will remain in there anyway. The lay-out looks perfect. Also the cover is perfect!
Since I have no corrections the books will probably be delivered October 21st.

Finally

My thesis is finally on its way to the printers. If everything goes well it will arrive October 21st, but probably in the week after that.

4th article

My fourth article has been published finally. This is chapter 6 of my thesis. A letter to the editor has been recently submitted and the last manuscript is in preparation.
